Deaf Centric

It starts with a story about my Dad.

Many years ago, my Dad went to a technical school in Minnesota. His dream was to be a draftsman. Today, he would be a CAD designer, but back then it was all about paper and pencil. He had all the necessary tools to be a draftsman, including a T-square he used for his drafting. He absolutely loved it! He had a passion for it.

One day, Dad's college advisor met with him. The advisor told him that pursuing a career as a draftsman wouldn't be possible because he was Deaf. My Dad asked why, and the advisor went on to explain that being a draftsman required communication, the ability to make phone calls, and participation in meetings. According to the advisor, being Deaf would make this career an impossibility.

The advisor suggested Dad learn how to run a printing press and switch his major. He told him that many Deaf people worked in the printing field, and that he could have a good living and provide for a family.

My Dad was heartbroken and devastated.

Mom added more to this story after Dad passed away. She told me that for two days after that meeting with his advisor, he was crushed. He cried. It was his dream to be a draftsman. My Dad also wanted to have a family. He wanted to get married and have children, so he switched his major.

Dad ended up being a printing press operator. He ran a printing press for over 40 years, and he chose to do it...for me. (wow)
